Welcome to First Grade! Those kindergarten skills are built upon so that by the end of the school year, your child will be reading more than you ever thought you would see this early in his/her education. First grade students practice reading stories out of their reading textbooks to their parents as well as their teacher. We will also advance those math and critical thinking skills! They will begin learning their addition and subtraction facts in math and even take math fact assessments. Students will now have their own social studies textbooks for the first semester and their own science textbooks for the second semester. First grade students will begin English this year too, and students will have spelling after the first couple of weeks of school. Students will begin using the Accelerated Reading computerized program as well. So you see, first grade is a year of new beginnings!
